Young NCL Volunteers Bring Cheer to Mount Vernon Towers

For two-and-a-half hours on the first Saturday afternoon of every month, a group of a dozen or more teenage girls and their mothers, all members of the National Charity League, Inc. – Dunwoody Chapter, bring lots of energy, laughter and cheer to the seniors at Mount Vernon Towers who reside in the Towers’ onsite personal care community, Sandy Springs Personal Care.

National Charity League, Inc. is a mother-daughter organization dedicated to fostering the mother-daughter relationship through community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. Each chapter of National Charity League, Inc. consists of mothers and their daughters in grades seven through twelve. Each mother and daughter serves at least 20 philanthropic hours per year.

“Our residents in the 28-bed healthcare center really look forward to these fun-filled afternoons,” says Cindy Hewlett, Activities Director at Mount Vernon Towers. “The girls read from books or tell stories, encourage residents to share their memories, and they bring so much joy just by being here! They make our residents feel very special.”

In addition to these monthly visits, the National Charity League – Dunwoody Chapter also hosts an annual Mad Hatter Tea Party in February for all Mount Vernon Towers residents over 90.

“It’s amazing how much this group does for Mount Vernon Towers throughout the year,” says Cindy. “Their hearts are full of love, and they also enjoy helping us decorate for the major holidays. They are angels that continue every year to pour out their love and service to our residents.”

“Our goal is to promote a sense of community responsibility in our daughters,” according to Cady Carnes, Chair of the 2014 Mother-Daughter Tea. “Being part of the National Charity League gives us many opportunities to do things together and volunteer.”

Thank you to all who are involved with the NCL – Dunwoody Chapter!
