Meet Cindy Hewlett, Activities Director for Mount Vernon Towers

cindy-hewlett“I am blessed to work here.”

Cindy Hewlett, Activities Director for Mount Vernon Towers, beams as she remembers how she landed the position that she has held since 2006. Before her husband died of a brain tumor she told him she wanted to return to work serving seniors. Without even knowing there was a job opening, she walked into Mount Vernon Towers to apply for a job as Director of Activities.

“Tommy Miller, our Executive Director, just took me on faith. I guess he recognized my energy and enthusiasm, and how much I enjoy planning and organizing fun events. I just have a passion for people,” says Hewlett, whose sunny disposition brings a smile to the face of any resident she meets. “The Lord sent me here. I love this place – it’s the best-kept secret in Georgia!”

Hewlett, who has a degree in recreational therapy as well as elementary education from the University of Georgia, coordinates all events and activities for the residents at Mount Vernon Towers, the independent living community for senior citizens in the heart of Sandy Springs.

Together with her assistant, Dorothy (Cis) Imbornone who has been at Mount Vernon Towers for more than 20 years, they plan seven huge parties every year, including a ‘wild and crazy’ talent show. “We put on elaborate theme parties as well, such as Cruise Night and April in Paris.

“This is such an active community, there’s something special on the calendar almost every day, from lectures and presentations, movies, trivia games and visits to local theatres and museums. It sure keeps us on our toes but we do manage to come up with fun and interesting events every time!” Cindy has been instrumental in having major politicians including Senatorial and Gubernatorial candidates speak, classical pianists and performers entertain, and even 24 piece big band orchestras playing at Mount Vernon Towers.

As Tommy Miller says, “The residents of Mount Vernon Towers love Cindy Hewlett and her genuine love for them!”
