Long-term Resident Makes Newcomers Feel at Home at Mount Vernon Towers

Gloria-CookWhen you have lived in a community for almost twenty years, like Gloria Cook, who has called Mount Vernon Towers home since December 1995, you are the definitely the right person to welcome newcomers here!

Mount Vernon Towers has been a big part of Mrs. Cook’s life. “I was coming to the Towers when it was first built, to visit my Mother, as well as my aunt and uncle who had all moved here,” she says.

“I just love it, and I love to welcome new people here.”

Mrs. Cook grew up in Atlanta, but she and her husband – who worked with ACDelco and General Motors – and their son and daughter also lived in Knoxville and Chattanooga (TN). Today, Mrs. Cook’s family includes six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

After her husband’s death in 2002, Mrs. Cook felt comforted by the many friends she had made at Mount Vernon Towers. “Being active is the secret to a full and happy life,” according to Mrs. Cook. “I am involved with many different groups and know so many people here, and I am so happy that my days are full with a lot of different events and activities.”

The Newcomers Club is dear to her heart. “On Wednesdays, we host a newcomers table in the dining room, and that’s when we share information about the many outings, lectures, parties and get-togethers that are open to everyone who lives here. We also talk about how easy it is to get around using the Mount Vernon Shuttle, and about the shops and restaurants in the area that newcomers may want to try out.”

With her warm smile and kind advice about living well at Mount Vernon Towers, Mrs. Cook is an integral part of what makes Mount Vernon Towers such a comfortable place to live.

She is also a fan of the fresh and creative meals served in the dining room. “Our menus reflect the modern trend toward “healthy cooking with flair.” Just the other day, we had a beet salad with pears, and there are always low-sodium and heart-healthy entrees on the menu. And you know what? Everything tastes even better because we have the finest dining room staff in the whole city!”

Thank you for being such a great ambassador for Mount Vernon Towers, Mrs. Cook!
