After nine years full of laughter, fabulous theme parties, outrageous talent shows and a continuous array of interesting, educational, musical and community events, Cindy Hewlett, Activities Director at Mount Vernon Towers, has made the difficult decision to retire from her day-to-day responsibilities effective May 31. She is stepping down because of lingering back problems after a car accident, and also to be able to spend more time with her elderly parents who live in Columbus.

But, as she writes in her loving announcement to the residents at Mount Vernon Towers:

“I may be resigning my position, but you won’t see me leave – I will come back and participate in parties, visit all of you and volunteer in any way I can. (…) I will be back because my life would be incomplete without all of you. Truly, we have bonded for life!”

“The joy here at Mount Vernon Towers is overwhelming, you notice it just when you walk through the halls and see the many smiling faces that greet you,” says Cindy. “I have never felt as loved as I have here. I have learned and received so much from all my friends who live at the Towers, from their families – and from our great staff. They lift me up every day.”

Cindy’s eyes sparkle as she remembers how she landed the position that she has held since 2006. Before her husband died of a brain tumor she told him she wanted to return to work serving seniors. Without even knowing there was a job opening, she walked into Mount Vernon Towers to apply for a job as Activities Director.

“Tommy Miller, our Executive Director, recognized my energy and enthusiasm, and my passion for people, especially seniors,” says Cindy. “The Lord sent me here. I love this place – and I always will. I only want what is best for Mount Vernon Towers and the activities department. But the time has come for me to ‘change pastures,’ and I look forward to my next adventures.”

Together with her assistants, first Dorothy (Cis) Imbornone and currently Angie Payne, Cindy has planned at least seven huge parties every year, including a ‘wild and crazy’ talent show. “We put on elaborate theme parties as well, such as Cruise Night and April in Paris.”

Cindy has also been instrumental in having major politicians including Senatorial and Gubernatorial candidates speak, and even brought a 24 piece big band orchestra to play at Mount Vernon Towers.

“This is such an active community, and Angie Payne, our new Activities Director, will make sure that something special will go on almost every day, from lectures and presentations, movies, trivia games and visits to local theatres and museums.”

“Thank you for being my heart, soul, and inspiration. You will never fully know the difference that you individually have made in my life,” Cindy writes in her goodbye letter.

Cindy, we all thank you for your energy, creativity, top organizational skills and incredible hard work during the past nine years – but above all, for embracing us in your love, every day. We are blessed to know you and keep you dear, and we know that Mount Vernon Towers will always be in your heart.
