23 Feb Music, Maestro! The Sound of Joy At Mount Vernon Towers
When you check the full activities calendar for Mount Vernon Towers, Sandy Springs’ outstanding retirement community you’ll notice that not a week goes by without one or more live music performances – just in the past six months alone there have been concerts by choirs, big band orchestra’s, soloists on piano or violin, a seven-piece strong Mandolin band and an entire Balalaika orchestra in full costume.
The New Horizons Band led by Jeff Cutchins visits Mount Vernon Towers almost every month, and every time, their show is attended by a full house of senior music fans who appreciate the band’s musicianship and the wide selection of upbeat music from the ’40s and ’50s.
Musical Talent In-house:
Mount Vernon Towers has its own unparalleled singing group, The Melodears directed by Mrs. Aloe Greeson. The 30+ member group practices weekly and performs quarterly concerts themed to specific holidays.
In addition, both the staff and the residents at Mount Vernon Towers put on their own annual Talent Shows – and the practices that start months in advance are almost as much fun as the shows themselves.
Music’s Health Benefits:

While music cannot cure dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, music can help seniors ‘wake up’ their memories. A beautiful and moving 2014 documentary by Michael Rossato-Bennett, “Alive Inside: A Story of Music & Memory” follows the efforts of one man to highlight the benefits of music on people who suffer from these diseases.
According to a recent Next Avenue article: “Music therapy also provides therapists with important clues to help assess emotional and physical health –we’vewitnessed how up-tempo and dance music sparks toe-tapping, even in individuals with late-stage dementia. And music from the distant past, often when they were young adults in their early 20s, will elicit a response and singing along from patients who are otherwise non-communicative.” To read the full article, click here.
