‘Intergenerational Interaction’ at Mount Vernon Towers

Earlier this month, 48 first graders from Mount Vernon Presbyterian School walked over to Mount Vernon Towers for an intergenerational get-together with a number of the residents who live in the senior community in the heart of Sandy Springs. This fun event was part of the school’s “Helping Hands Day,” coordinated by Kelly Fitzgerald of the private coeducational school that operates grades K-12 in addition to a preschool.

The students sang some happy songs, shared a lovely poem and then visited with the residents for a good part of the morning. Many brought their favorite books and shared their reading skills that were “…already quite impressive for first-graders!” according to Tommy Miller, Executive Director of Mount Vernon Towers.

Later that same morning, middle school students of MVPS sat down to interview a group of residents at Mount Vernon Towers about their lives and accomplishments. The students’ assignment: learn from seniors, be inspired by their life stories and retell the stories in compositions called “Reflections.” A special focus of these interviews was the question: “Where were you on September 11, 2001?”

“Our homeowners at Mount Vernon Towers appreciate the opportunity to interact with these bright young people, and share good times and good memories with them,” says Tommy. “All of us love to learn new things, every day. There is no age limit to that!”
