05 Aug Mount Vernon Towers: Well-Run and Well-Loved by the People Who Live Here
Mrs. Doris Davies, who moved with her husband Guy to their spacious 9th floor condominium in Mount Vernon Towers in 2007, assumed the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors at the independent living community in February 2016.
“Our dear friend Ralph Marion passed away unexpectedly, and I was honored to step in and fill the vacancy he left behind,” she notes. “The well-being of this community is close to my heart.”
Mrs. Davies, who retired from Unocal Corporation after a 27-year career in accounting, systems and planning, explains what sets Mount Vernon Towers apart from many other senior communities.
“Thirty years ago, Mount Vernon Towers was built as an independent senior condominium complex. Whereas other senior communities are owned by companies, every condominium in Mount Vernon Towers is owned by individuals who are all members of the Mount Vernon Towers Homeowners Association,” notes Mrs. Davies.
“All owners pay association fees that go to the homeowners association. These fees pay the salaries of the almost 80 employees who work in our management office, dining room, kitchen and maintenance department as well as the twenty six bed Personal Care Center. In addition, the dues are used for upkeep and maintenance of our public areas and buildings, and any necessary improvements, renovations and replacements of the furnishings.”
Mrs. Davies clarifies: “All owners have a say in how Mount Vernon Towers is run, and how their money is spent.”
Not all residents at Mount Vernon Towers are owners, though all need to be at least 55 years or older in order to live here. “Some families have selected to rent out the condominium that they inherited from their loved one. Other owners purchased a condominium as an investment, and with all that is happening in the booming Sandy Springs area, that has proven to be a smart move!” notes Mrs. Davies.
“We work closely with Chris Peterson, our Executive Director, to make sure that Mount Vernon Towers, a not-for-profit organization, continues to be run in a proactive, prudent manner,” she continues. “We are very proud to say that during Mount Vernon Towers’ entire existence, we’ve never had to levy an assessment on the owners. And when you consider that we’ve had to replace the roof and three large elevators, you understand that this was a major accomplishment.”
Mrs. Davies thrives on helping others. In addition to serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors, she also coordinates the popular “Couples Club” at the independent living community in the heart of Sandy Springs.
