Mount Vernon Towers’ Staff and Residents Make Me Feel at Home Here

Bob-JonesIn 1979, Bob Jones and his beloved wife built their 4-bedroom home in Smyrna, one of Atlanta’s green residential enclaves not too far from Buckhead. They raised their family including two daughters and one son here, and Mr. Jones continued to live in the home after his wife died too young in 1999.

After 35 years in Smyrna, in May 2014, Bob Jones moved to a one-bedroom condominium in Mount Vernon Towers after a four-month search for a suitable retirement community.

“I knew this was the right place for me as soon as I met Curt (Frinkle, Director of Sales),” remarks Mr. Jones. “You can feel the happy atmosphere of this community immediately when you walk into the lobby – you are instantly made to feel welcome by both the staff and the people who live here. I did not need to rationalize my move here but instead went with my gut reaction – it just felt right.”

Mr. Jones, a well-known Atlanta educator and Administrator who is remembered fondly by many students at Holy Innocents Episcopal School and the Lovett School, taught Mathematics, Phys. Ed, Baseball, and Football, and is pleased to be able to continue to live a healthy lifestyle at Mount Vernon Towers.

“There is a good weight room here, and I like to ride the bike or walk at least 30 minutes per day,” he says. “I encourage people to keep exercising, be it Tai Chi, Yoga, riding a bike or walking on the grounds.”

Though it was a big change for him to move to Mount Vernon Towers, Mr. Jones notes that “…it was a relief to downsize.”

Thanks to Mount Vernon Towers’ maintenance director, Michael McAlonan, the move into his new condominium was “… smooth and painless, and Michael was very conscientious and made sure that everything was done completely to my satisfaction.”

“This is a new beginning in my life. I know I made the right choice, and I am enjoying this easier lifestyle. The food is very good here, and there are so many opportunities to meet new people,” says Mr. Jones, who has joined The Melodears singing group and enjoys matching wits with other residents at The Towers at the weekly Trivia games.

“Both Cindy (Hewlett) and Angie (Payne) have done such a good job to ‘help me find a home here’ and include me in lots of different activities and events at The Towers,” says the active 77-year old, who has always been involved and engaged with the Atlanta community.

Through his church, Trinity Presbyterian, he tutored underprivileged children for 9 years after his retirement in 2005, and still helps with the Meals on Wheels ministry on a monthly basis. In addition, every Saturday evening, Mr. Jones fills up his car with unsold meals and sandwiches from Atlanta’s iconic Henri’s Bakery, and delivers them to the guests at the Atlanta Mission Shepherd’s Inn. “It’s the highlight of my week, and hopefully I am planting some seeds for future generations.”

Looking back on his first year at Mount Vernon Towers, Mr. Jones is pleased to note how easy it was for him to become part of the community at Mount Vernon Towers. “And that was not on my own doing,” he remarks. “Kudos to the staff and the residents who make you feel at home here. This is a happy place for me.”
