13 Nov Don’t Become a Target, Warns Mount Vernon Towers’ CFO/COO Chris Peterson
Recently, Chris Peterson, the Chief Financial Officer of Mount Vernon Towers, the retirement community in the heart of Sandy Springs, was interviewed on Atlanta’s TV station WSB TV about the unscrupulous scammers who often target the elderly.
“Words really don’t describe the type of person who would steal from an elderly person,” said Peterson on air. He emphasized that it is important to always be careful about sharing identifying information online, and to be highly skeptical of any email messages that offer financial windfalls or confidential transactions. According to the Better Business Bureau, here are some tips to protect against fraud:
- Do not share personal banking information, credit card numbers or social security numbers with someone who calls or emails you.
- If someone from ‘a government agency’ asks for money, ask for a certified letter on official letterhead.
- Do not make ‘on the spot’ decisions. Do not honor requests to ‘act immediately.’
