29 Oct Living Near Family – Some Pros, Some Cons
Many residents at Mount Vernon Towers, the independent living community in the heart of Sandy Springs, selected to move to this central location especially so that they could live closer to their adult children and their families.
There are many pros of living near your loved ones after you retire, notes Tommy Miller, Executive Director of Mount Vernon Towers.
“You have a much better opportunity to be with your grandchildren and be part of their lives as they grow up. Often, grandparents who live close enjoy helping with some of the childcare or babysitting, with is so appreciated by all parties – the children, the parents and the grandparents,” he says.
“Similarly, you get to enjoy support from your children as you age. Living geographically close makes it easier for adult children to ‘pop in,’ or take their parent shopping or to a doctor’s appointment. It allows for more frequent and relaxed visits compared to once-a-year vacations when many activities need to be crammed into a long weekend.”
However, for some families, maintaining a bit of a distance is preferred.
“If your adult children have a career that requires them to move around the country a lot, you would not want to follow them around and pack up and move any time they do. Or maybe, if your children live in a part of the country that is not your favorite area, you may regret your decision to live close to them.”
There are a number of major reasons for people to select where they want to spend their later years in addition to ‘living close to family’. These include:
- Living in a warm weather location
- Being part of an active community
- Ability to pursue hobbies and activities
- Enjoying a low-tax environment.
For many, moving to Mount Vernon Towers has been the right choice. For some, living here is perfect because it is close to family or the old neighborhood. For others, the deciding factor to move here was the variety of services offered, as well as its excellent location near shopping, a major international airport and world-class hospitals.
