The 1940’s is one of the defining decades in the 20th century, and one that many of the residents at Mount Vernon Towers remember fondly – even though World War II had a great impact on everyone’s life.

The decade that was framed by Ernest Hemingway’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls” (1940) and “Nineteen Eighty-Four” by George Orwell in 1949 was also the ‘golden age’ of Hollywood movies, the heyday of many wildly-popular film stars such as Gregory Peck and Rita Hayworth, and of course, an explosion of new music!

“Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller provided the soundtrack of our lives during this period, and I still want to dance when I hear Pennsylvania 6-5000,” says Jack Castle, a long-term resident of Mount Vernon Towers.

To bring back the Fabulous Forties, Tommy Miller, Mount Vernon Towers’ executive director, will host a special Fabulous Forties Trivia Night on Monday evening, February 18. This event is really just a warm-up for the Fabulous Forties Dinner Party on Thursday evening, February 28. There will be a live band blasting music of the era, great decorations, a splendid dinner, and of course, all guests are asked to wear their best ’40s-inspired finery – though there won’t be many loafers and bobby-socks!

Also as part of February’s Fabulous Forties celebration, Tommy will show a collection of historic video-clips of music, film and actual events to the residents on Monday, February 25th. “Our residents love to celebrate some of the best times of the 20th century together, and to reminisce and tell their stories. For many, the 1940’s were indeed fabulous, and there is nothing better than to share memories with people who know exactly what you are talking about!”
