05 Nov Testimonial from Doris Davies
Doris Davies and her husband Guy have lived at Mount Vernon Towers since 2007, where they moved after Guy had a stroke and started using a wheelchair. “We had to make the decision to move rather quickly because of medical reasons, but now we cannot believe how lucky we were to find two combined one-bedroom units in Mount Vernon Towers,” says Doris, who currently serves on the community’s Board of Directors.
“We checked out a number of independent living facilities, but most other kitchens were ‘early dorm,'” according to Doris, a celebrated cook. “The greatest luxury for me is having the time to cook, and trying out new recipes on my husband and my friends. I can get really creative in the kitchen of our 1,400 sq. ft. unit – and on other days, we enjoy the meals in the dining room!”
Location is another plus: “Some of our kids live nearby and we are also close to good shopping at North Point Mall and Perimeter Mall; we are on the fringes of Buckhead with its restaurants and entertainment; and it’s easy for us to travel to Florida to visit friends or catch a cruise.”
Self-described ‘go-getters,’ the couple loves the many opportunities for social interaction at owner-operated Mount Vernon Towers. They enjoy activities such as bridge, movie nights and musical performances, and appreciate the freedom to “be as social as you wish to be.” Recently, Doris formed a couples club that will get together for five dinner parties per year.
“Initially, in our case, Mount Vernon was the solution to a very specific problem: we were just not able to stay in our ranch house. But now, there is no place where we would rather be. We are happy, we are independent, and we live in a resort-like setting with lots of friends. This is home.”
