On Sunday afternoon, January 26, the dining room of Mount Vernon Towers, the senior independent living community in the heart of Sandy Springs, resembled the Red Queen’s garden from Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Members of the National Charity League, Inc. – Dunwoody Chapter hosted the Second Annual Mad Hatter Tea Party for the ‘Nifty Nineties’ – a vibrant group of 90+ year-old residents who live at Mount Vernon Towers. Everybody was asked to wear red, and don their ‘maddest’ hats.

Mount Vernon Towers dedicated this year’s Tea Party to the memory of Maureen Jensen, a beloved resident who first coined the name, “Nifty Ninety”, and who worked tirelessly to promote their long-lived wisdom, wit and treasured memories. An RN by education and florist by avocation, Maureen handcrafted innumerable mementos and delivered the surprises, filled with candies, for every holiday occasion throughout the year. Her loving heart and helping hands spread much sunshine and laughter among ‘her’ Nifty Nineties at Mount Vernon Towers.

This was the ninth year that the NCL – Dunwoody Chapter hosted a tea party at Mount Vernon Towers. National Charity League, Inc. is a mother-daughter organization dedicated to fostering the mother-daughter relationship through community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. Each chapter of National Charity League, Inc. consists of mothers and their daughters in grades seven through twelve. Each mother and daughter serves at least 20 philanthropic hours per year.

“Our goal is to promote a sense of community responsibility in our daughters,” said Cady Carnes, Chair of the 2014 Mother-Daughter Tea. “Being part of the National Charity League gives us many opportunities to do things together and volunteer.”

“This was our Second Annual Mad Hatter Tea Party at Mount Vernon Towers. There were lots of red decorations, great entertainment by the girls, and of course, some delicious tea party food,” noted Carnes. More than 200 people joined in the fun, including the NCL mothers and daughters.
