Betty Birdsong Exchanges Cabin for Condo

betty birdsongBetty Birdsong, a vibrant 80-year old with smiling eyes, describes herself as a ‘gypsy.’

Most recently, before moving to Mount Vernon Towers in June 2013, she lived in a rustic cabin on a river in the charming town of Ellijay in the North Georgia Mountains. “As I was aging, the cabin got to be a bit too rustic,” says Mrs. Birdsong. “What really helped me to decide to move closer to one of my sons, who lives in Smyrna, was the fact that there were just too many steps in the cabin for me.”

Mrs. Birdsong, who has her degree in Sociology, worked for almost 18 years in the preschool program of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. Until 1994, she lived in the Sandy Springs area for 28 years, where she raised her two sons. Currently, her other son and his family live in Chapel Hill (NC).

“I always knew about Mount Vernon Towers, but until my knees and legs started to act up, I did not consider living here as an option for me. When I finally came to visit, I was impressed with the services that are available here, and the fun, often spontaneous programs.

“Most of all, I appreciated the flexibility offered by Mount Vernon Towers: I am able to lease for a year before purchasing my current one-bedroom condominium on the seventh floor that overlooks the courtyard,” according to Mrs. Birdsong.

Never at a loss for words, Mrs. Birdsong has met many of Mount Vernon Towers’ residents already, and is happy in her new surroundings. “Though they never suggested that I move from my Ellijay cabin, I can tell that my sons are pleased too that I decided it was time to come off the mountain,” she confides.

“I love current events, and I love learning – so I do spend quite some time on my computer,” says Mrs. Birdsong. “But I also enjoy the people around me, and I am so happy that I moved here – for me, it’s the right place at the right time.”
